Digital Music -- MP3's
How to Download, Save and Play Them

As defined by Whatis.com, MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard technology and format for compressing a sound sequence into a very small file (about one-twelfth the size of the original file) while preserving the original level of sound quality when it is played.

There are many questions about the "legality" of MP3 and here is a site that explains in easy to understand terms how MP3 is to be used.

Aside from all the behind the scenes information, here is how to download and listen to MP3 music:

First you need an MP3 player.  If you have Windows 98 or the newest version of the Microsoft Media Player or Netscape 4.7 or AOL 5.0 (I think), then you are ready to go already.

If you don't meet the above criteria, then you can download either:

WindowsMedia.jpg (11593 bytes)
Sonique
2.7 MB (~15 minutes with 28.8 modem)

Winamp
1.9 MB (~10 minutes with 28.8 Modem)

After you download and then install (if you needed to) a MP3 player, you now have to go out and find your music.  Here's where and how:

First off as always, I recommend downloading anything to your desktop so that you know where to find after it is done.  But let's go one step further and create a folder on the desktop called MP3 music by:

  1. Right Click on a blank part of your desktop
  2. Click on New
  3. Click on Folder
  4. Type:   MP3 music
  5. Press Enter on your keyboard
Now you are ready to download some music.  Here are some of the most popular sites:

Lycos

A typical MP3 song will be between 4 and 6 megabytes.  What that means to us is that at a normal 28.8 Internet connection, it will take between 12 and 25 minutes to download a song.

Once you have downloaded the song to your computer, simply double-click on your MP3 music folder on your desktop and then double click on the song of your choice.  You can also open the song (or multiple songs) from within your MP3 player.

Most of all, have fun with digital music!
