| Digital cameras and scanners have become even more popular than
when we first discussed them last year. Falling prices, improved paper
and printers both contribute to the rise in their popularity.
However, the most common frustration in using these new tools is how to
properly save, print and share the pictures.
Tonight we discussed a few rules that need to be adhered to when embarking
on a digital photography journey. Adobe Photo Deluxe was the software
package used for the demonstrations, but the rules and techniques
apply to all image editing programs.
Rule #1
Always save your work in JPEG format and remember where you saved
them. Two reasons for this; it will conserve space on your hard
drive while retaining quality and the file is universally read.
Rule #2
The size (resolution) that you save your picture as is determined by the
use of the picture:
| Email |
~ 400 pixels wide (or long if a portrait) |
| Print |
~ 1200 pixels wide maximum (about 8") |
| Clip Art |
~ 250 pixels wide |
| Web photo |
~ 150 pixels wide then link it to whatever size you want |
Rule #3
Remember that your computer and photo editing software can help improve
your scans or digital photos. Take advantage of:
- cropping
- rotating (righting, upside down pictures)
- brightness & contrast
- cloning
- red-eye removal
- special effects
Working with your scanner or digital camera takes practice and
patience. Don't be discouraged by your initial efforts, remember
that in the digital world you can always undo your mistakes!
