The Art of Downloading

Downloading is defined simply as transferring data (information) from any computer to yours. When you check your email, you are downloading information from your Internet provider. Today, we talked about how to search for and download programs and information from the Internet.

Some basic tools that your computer should be equipped with if you plan on downloading include:

Many programs and utilities can be found via the Internet to accomplish a task you need or would like the computer to do for you. Some of the best places to find these little gems (known as shareware) are:

Take your time to review the software and read the online users' feedback and professional reviews to help make a good decision.

After finding a piece of shareware you would like to try, here is how to download and install it for evaluation:

  1. Click one time on the Download button or link

  2. In the Save As dialog box, click in the "Save in" box and choose the desktop

  3. Click Save

  4. Wait for the download to finish (you can continue to read and write email or cruise the Internet while the download proceeds)

  5. When the download finishes, close all programs and disconnect from the Internet

  6. On your desktop, you should find an icon bearing the name of the file your downloaded

  7. Double-click on this file

  8. If it is a ZIP or compressed file, the contents of the file will be revealed.

  9. The first few times you work with shareware, look for a 'readme' file that will give you extra information and installation instructions about the product

  10. Next, look for a setup or install application file and double-click on it to initiate the installation and follow the on-screen instructions

  11. If the file you downloaded is not a ZIP or compressed file, the installation will begin when you double-click

  12. After you have installed the software, you may either back up the file you downloaded (if you plan to keep it and don't want to lose it) or just delete it. Once the program is installed, you don't need to keep the installation file

Uninstalling Shareware

Find the shareware's listing in your program list, and use its uninstall or remove feature

If you don't find it listed in the programs list, look for it in the Add/Remove program section of your Control Panel
