Setting Up a Home Network

Terminology

Network  connecting two or more computers together to share files, printers and/or an Internet connection. Also known as a LAN (Local Area Network)
Network Card A device that functions to connect computers together via a wired or wireless network. The card can be either internal or external
Ethernet The most common protocol used when setting up a network. You might find network parts listed as Ethernet cards, or Ethernet cable
Network Cable The cabling used to connect computers together in a wired network
Hub A connection device used to link more than two computers together (considered a "dumb" device because it doesn't direct traffic)
Switch Basically a smarter hub. A switch also allows the connection of multiple computers, but can distinguish one computer from another and directs traffic accordingly
Router Commonly used as a way of sharing a high speed Internet connection. Also works as a hardware firewall
Wireless Internet  Uses high frequency radio waves to transmit connections in a limited diameter (normally 300' or less)
Crossover Cable Used to connect two computers together without a hub or switch
NIC Network Interface Card, same as network card listed above
