Y2K - What should we expect in January?

The reality of Y2K for our home computers is pretty boring...there will be no problem for most of us.  Almost all computers built since 1995-6 are Y2K compliant, and the computers built before then are easy to fix with a BIOS upgrade or manually setting the clock come New Years.

Now software is a different story.  If you are running date sensitive software (such as Quicken), you will need to check with the manufacturer as to any problems and how to fix it.

As far as public utilities go, I have checked with all of them and none of them expect any problems.

Public Service has been working since 1996 to rectify any problems and as of April was 100% compliant with all their software and computer systems.  Their embedded systems are slated to be finished by June.  You can call 303-294-2000 for more information and a free report.

Grand Valley Rural Power Lines stated that they get their power from Public Service and they expect to be fine.  They are in the midst of ironing out some details in Accounting.

I received the greatest Y2K quote I've heard yet from Rex at Ute Water; "Water runs downhill."  That pretty much sums it up in three words.  He did elaborate that in addition to our system being gravity fed, that the filter plants are almost 100% manually operated and computers are only used to "monitor" the system.  In the event of a computer problem, the monitoring can simply be done manually.
