Computer Tricks and Secrets

In today's sessions, Rick shared some time saving tricks and tips for Windows,
backing up files, the Internet, email and more. Here are a few of the tips he
shared:
Windows
- Creating a desktop shortcut by clicking and dragging a file or program
to the desktop using the RIGHT mouse button
- Keeping the hard drive in good working order through Scan Disk, Defrag
and Disk Cleanup
- Decrease the time it takes to reboot or start your computer through the
use of "msconfig" in Windows 98 and greater OR using Startup
Cop in Windows 95
- Learn to use the Windows taskbar to increase your productivity and not
waste time on the computer
Printing
- Save time and ink when printing documents by using the draft mode of
your printer
- How to print only the part of a page (in email, word processing, or
Internet) that you want without all the extra information
Internet
- How to find what you are looking for...fast by using good searching
techniques and the right search engine.
- What to do with a 'message 404' or 'page can't be found'
- How to save and organize frequently visited web sites
- Where to find a software solution to almost any task and how to download
and use the software
Email
- Send email to multiple people...blindly
- Forward messages without all the headers
- Filter email to help sift through junk mail and organize incoming email
- How to effectively handle email attachments
- How to delete an email without reading or previewing it
General
- The importance of maintaining and updating anti-virus software
- Use the keyboard to speed up almost any task
Also in today's session, the following are some of the tips that were shared by other User Group
attendees:
- Use Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen on your keyboard to take
"pictures" of whatever is on the screen and then paste the
picture into a word processor or Microsoft Paint
- Use a program like Strip Mail or Email stripper to clean up forwarded
email
- Learn to create a custom toolbar for the desktop for one click access to
your favorite programs or files.
