We just purchased a DVD recorder.
It feels like one must be a
programmer to operate the dang
thing!
Is it a male toy?
Obviously I won't touch it.

Still the VCR is number one for time shifting and watching regular TV programs and recording movies. I have a stand alone DVD recorder, but I found the VCR more reliable (and less expensive) for time shifting.
Digital Video Recorders, like TiVo, are far more flexible, easy to use, and reliable than a VCR and the quality is much better. If you like recording TV shows, a DVR is a MUST have gadget.

For movie rental, it is a DVD player.
DVR's are #1

VHS & DVD
Tho, it seems DVD rentals are of poor
quality.
Movies
I watch on VHS (have a collection of many old classics) and DVD's.
