Linux growing rapidly

Submitted by Rick on March 18, 2008 - 10:07pm.
  • Riding Shotgun with Rick

I never thought I would write about or like Linux as much as I do. If you search HelpMeRick.com for Linux or Ubuntu, you will get a plethora of information.

Today, I received an email from Bill in Kentucky, who is an avid listener of our web show. He sent me links to stories of major organizations from all over the world describing the exodus from Windows to Linux. Cost is definitely a factor, but the functionality, safety and stability of Linux also ranks very high for the switching organizations. Listed below are the articles for you to read for yourself....thanks Bill in KY!

I don't have a question, but rather a news story. Microsoft is in big trouble, not from the EU or from the latest Vista or Novell problem. This seems like mass defections from Windows to Linux.

  • Just recently, The Philippines has adopted Linux to be in 23,000 of its school computers.  While 23,000 is a lot of computers that pales in comparison with the next story.

  • Joining the mass defection to Linux is Russia, by 2009 . Three of its regions will be all Linux and the rest will be all Linux by the following year. Thats a lot of school computers. "Linux is a piece of open source software, free online to anyone who wants it, and Russian schools are switching to it to save cash."

  • South America is picking up Linux
  • The French Police is moving to Linux

  • The U.S. Army is moving to Linux
  • City of Munich moved to Linux and the Netherlands is moving to Linux.

  • Australia moving to Open source

  • San Fransisco Bay Area schools move to Linux

  • South Africa moving to Linux (Would save them $352 millions in license fees!)

A couple of hundred thousand more Linux converts

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 27, 2008 - 6:42pm.

Linux might be installed on more than 125 thousand computers in 42 thousand Russian post offices

http://eng.cnews.ru/news/top/indexEn...8/04/24/298514

"The Russian Post accounts migration to the free software for cutting losses. In February Aleksey Kazmin, the new director general of the Russian Post, announced the net losses of the federal state unitary enterprise accounted for 4.6 bn rubles ($195.088 m) for the previous year, which was a 60% increase as compared to a year earlier.

If the experiment launched is a success, more than 42 thousand post offices with more than 125 thousand computers will migrate to the new Linux-based software. Aleksey Kuzmin told CNews the first Linux installations were likely to be held on the work stations of public internet access point."

KDE Linux reaches 52 million Brazilian kids

http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS9016897370.html

"Brazil's Ministry of Education ("MEC") is installing Linux in labs used by 52 million schoolchildren, reports KDE developer Mauricio Piacentini. Piacentini's blog post describes MEC's "Linux Educacional 2.0" as "a very clean Debian-based distribution, with KDE 3.5, KDE-Edu, KDE-Games, and some tools developed by the project." ...

Thus, most labs have 15 available workstations. For labs in rural locations with limited electricity, a single server can support up to seven KVMs. There's also a set-up with a large TV monitor for special needs children. Some 29,000 labs will be completed this year, with 53,000 labs set up by the end of next year."

Linux To Power 20% Mobile Phones By 2013

http://www.informationweek.com/news/software/linux/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=207400935

It's not a forecast that will leave Symbian and Windows Mobile supporters quaking in their boots, but ABI Research is predicting that about 20% of middle and high-end mobile handsets will be running some form of the Linux operating system by 2013.

http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htiw/articles/20080421.aspx

April 21, 2008: One method of protecting your military networks from hackers is to use an operating system other than the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows (which controls over 85 percent of the market). Linux has been a popular choice for the military. The U.S. Navy uses Linux to run critical systems on its warships. The U.S. Army is using Linux for its networked FCS (Future Combat System) vehicles (which are still in development). The army is also converting many of its Microsoft Windows applications to run under Linux.

Linux phones get boost from Japanese carrier
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/3g/linux-phones-get-boost-from-japanese-carrier-325253

The increasingly successful mobile Linux operating system has received a massive shot in the arm through the decision by Japan’s largest wireless operator, NTT DoCoMo, to release Linux development tools to handset makers.

DoCoMo, which is also one of the world’s biggest mobile telcos, has announced an ‘operator pack’ that helps phone manufacturers build LiMo-compatible phones for its 3G W-CDMA network.
