Microsoft Office function without the MS price - on a Mac! - Video Tip

Submitted by Rick on March 27, 2008 - 8:16pm.
  • Macintosh

This is the first of what we hope to be many Macintosh video tips here at HelpMeRick.com. We posted a similar tip to this one a few months back for Windows and Ubuntu users, but this one applies to Mac users only.

In this tip, I describe to you how you can use the free NeoOffice product from neooffice.org to seamlessly create Microsoft Office compatible documents. Of course, the software also allows Mac users to open any Office document as well. NeoOffice gives Mac users complete abilities to share documents with any Windows user or fellow Mac user.

This short video demonstrates how to set your copy of NeoOffice so that it automatically saves your documents in the Microsoft Office format:

NeoOffice for Macs

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 2, 2008 - 6:08pm.

Would NeoOffice also be a good tool for opening the occasional PC email that I can't seem to open on my Macs? Sometimes it's very frustrating to be a Mac person in a PC world!

Sure, NeoOffice would work great for you to open up those types of email attachments.

I, too, like AbiWord, but we have found that on the Mac it has some issues with printing and with sending to PC folks after converting to a Word format. But it is a great light weight word processor for ANY operating system.

As for the NeoOffice, I also agree with you about previous versions of the software. However, with this new 2.3 version, it seems to be extremely responsive and feels like a true Mac application. Give it another shot and let me know what you think!

Excellent tutorial! *Almost* makes me want to try NeoOffice again. I don't know if it's still the case, but when I tried NeoOffice back in the day, it was painfully slow and clunky.

For folks who just want a basic, free word processor, I recommend AbiWord. It's slimmer, faster and does what it does very well. Keep those Mac tips coming!
