High Resolution Maps

Treo MapsAdam was right...I was going to write briefly about Google Mobile Maps . Originally built for Microsoft and other smart phones, Google finally ported this amazing application to the Palm operating system and Treo Smartphones. This free application gives mobile phone users a searchable high resolution map (including directions, traffic reports and satellite images) of the entire United States and beyond.

The best web based mobile maps prior to Google's effort was by MapQuest. They worked, and it was better than nothing, but the maps were pretty barren, and you couldn't pan or zoom them. Google's maps are full color, fast (for a phone) and can be panned and zoomed quickly. One other nice feature (on the Treo at least) is that once the map is downloaded, it stays on the Treo and doesn't have to reload from the Internet should you have to switch away from it to answer a call, check your calendar or take a picture.

Your cell phone has to have Internet capabilities to take advantage of this technology, but it is nothing short of amazing. Point your phone based browser to: http://www.google.com/gmm and Google will automatically detect whether your phone can use the maps and what version. You have to see it in action to believe it.
