Getting the Mail Button back in IE7 - Revised VIDEO TIP

When you upgrade to IE7 you will notice a total change in the interface. One of the big changes is a lack of menu bar and many of the old buttons.

If you are in the habit of clicking on the little envelope in Internet Explorer to get into your email, you will quickly see that the little envelope is gone.

Here's how to get it back:

1. Right-click on the bar where the buttons should be

2. Choose Customize Command Bar

3. Click Add or Remove Commands

4. In the window that comes up, choose Mail on the left side and click the Add button

5. You will see the Mail button move to the right side. Click on it and click the Move Up botton to place it at the top of the list.

6. Close the window and you should see the little tiny mail button appear in the upper right side of IE7.

question about mail icon in OE6

Submitted by Smart Computer User on November 9, 2008 - 2:15am.

I am not as sophisticated as a lot of the people who seem to write into you about the script in programs etc. I am just a simple look for email guy on here.

I use Outlook Express 6. When I used to get mail, the envelope icon used to appear in the bottom right side of my computer screen, that way I didnt have to be near the computer constantly checking to see if new mail came in when I had a different window in front of me, and no sound after mail is checked automatically to the timer I have set.

The last few months though, all of a sudden, the envelope never appears anymore. New mail comes in, and the envelope never does. Is there a way I can get the envelope back in Outlook Express?

Also one other question. I remember on OE a few years back, there used to be a button hidden in it someplace to repair OE. I had to write it down to get to it if I ever had an issue.

Here is where it was:

control panel
add/ remove programs
IE & internet tools
remove
then check repair

Can you tell me if there is a way to repair OE 6?

Thank you very much for your help!

Vinnie

I have been SOOOO frustrated with the new IE. Evidently I wasn't the only person who couldn't find the right icons. Thanks HelpMeRick.

The envelope icon Part Two

Submitted by Smart Computer User on February 13, 2007 - 7:23pm.

Actually I have to go to the right (beyond the right margin ">>") of the Tools icon to get to my Read Mail button. What a nuisance. But thank you for the simple instructions. Each time I have a success in working through a problem, I do feel more confident.

re: the envelope icon part two...

Just to the left of the "home" icon is a vertical separater bar. When you place your cursor over it you get a double ended arrow (<->). You can then left click and drag the line to the left, making more room to view all your added icons.

Showing the envelope icon

Submitted by Smart Computer User on February 14, 2007 - 10:53am.

Right-click on the gray bar (as per Rick's video), then uncheck "Lock the Toolbars". You will see a column of dots to the left of your icons. Move the cursor onto the dots (a double-headed arrow will appear), left-click (hold the button down), and you can drag the dots left to show more icons. Dragging right will show fewer icons. Then repeat the first step to check "Lock the Toolbars".

You could also use the instructions in Rick's video to remove some unused icons from the bar, which would allow unseen icons to be displayed.

Why did "they" take the envelope icon away in the first place?

Submitted by Smart Computer User on February 13, 2007 - 7:18pm.

I followed your instructions and now I can get to the mail without going to my start menu, but I still don't have the envelope back. I have to click on tools and then on "read mail". In what way does anyone think this is an enhancement? I am a very basic computer user and was completely baffled when Windows did the "upgrade" and suddenly I couldn't find my mail which is what I use my computer for almost exclusively. Why don't they tell you what the upgrades are going to do before they download them?

IE 7 Fix and Cool Link

Submitted by Smart Computer User on February 12, 2007 - 10:46am.

Here is another link that will stream the local GJ station that carries Castellini On Computers (if you want to listen to other programs in addition to COC during the week):

http://tuner1.dc1.sonixtream.com/SOLON/media/tuner/Tuner?aff=1100knzz

This link works (with various degrees of functionality) in IE, Opera, Firefox, Real Player, WMP.

Also - here's a patch for IE7:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928089

It does seem to help the sluggish performance of IE7 a bit...
