Quick tip to determine how much space is left on a disk
Before I get to the meat of today's tip, let's discuss the definition of disk. A disk is any computer device that can store data. Many times, computer users only think of floppy disks or CD's as disks, but hard drives, USB flash drives, and memory cards are all considered disks.
It is important to know how to determine how much free disk space you have on some of your disks. No matter the type of disk, you can figure out how much space is being used and how much is free by following these very simple steps:
- Double-click My Computer
- RIGHT Click on the drive you want the information about
- Click Properties
Ta da...you will now be presented with a pie chart showing the used (blue piece) and unused (pink piece) disk space.

PROPERTIES
Hi Rick,
Love your webpage and your show. I am glad I found you. I am very new to your site and your radio show. ( I discovered you because I kept listening to GNC after Micheal Riveros What Really Happened show.)
About checking properties... Couple weeks ago I checked my disk drive. And 7/8ths of my disk space was being used up. Which I thought to myself... ok, time to move some things to an external drive, to free up some room... anyway, next day I went to show my daughter how to check properties and told her too much of my disk space is being used up right now. And discovered to my SURPRISE that 7/8ths used space was now 1/2 suddenly. (And I did not move my data yet. I could not see anything missing either??? But I have alot of stuff so I cannot be certain I did not lose stuff...) Yes my PC is running slow and freezes despite having DSL. And I am very concerned about seeing my properties change so dramatically overnight, without me having moved those missing properties.
Its a mystery, I would like to solve. What happened? I have never seen this occur before. Have you ever seen anything like this or do you have anything to suggest?
My OS is XP pro.
Thanks for site and all the information that you share. This is the best site I have found for people who want to learn more about their computers.
