Is Vista driving computer prices down again?

Submitted by Rick on March 9, 2007 - 7:50am.
  • Riding Shotgun with Rick

After the release of Vista we saw prices for desktops and laptops rise nearly 15% for equivalent Windows XP computers. Since Vista's release, the sales numbers for computers and Vista itself have been dismal and retailers are not happy. I opened up my local paper today at breakfast and found that Office Depot had three decent laptops on sale for under $900 all with 1 GB of RAM. One was $699. We haven't seen those kind of prices on laptops since before Christmas. It makes me wonder if Microsoft is giving some kind of incentive to manufacturers to lower their prices in order to help drive sales.

What do you think? Have you read anything that I haven't that might explain the drop in computer prices again?

If this helped, consider buying me a beer or an Americano!

vista vs linux

Submitted by Smart Computer User on March 10, 2007 - 12:58pm.

i agree wholeheartedly. ms bloatware has gone off the deep end.
i am currenly checking out tne live cd's of ubuntu and kubuntu linux and i am very impressed. the new mac os is also very nice.
there are over 300 flavors of linux, most of which can be downloaded free. it is really coming into it's own, being easy to or auto configuring.
many of the live bootable cd's already have icon's for mozilla firefox and open office plus more right on the desktop, so point and click capability is still easy.
in my case when i boot a linux live cd it finds and loads
all the drivers for audio, video, usb drives, cdrom, and internet so i can surf immediately. it is very slick.
i recommend starting with ubuntu linux 6.06.1 LTS, which can be downloaded at www.ubuntu.org. (approx. 699mb iso) complete with instructions for burning the bootable live cd, from the iso file.
good luck! it's really fun! if you goof up, just re boot!
when you find one you like, most of them have an "install icon" on the desktop which will install linux of your choice to a blank partition on your hard drive. I'm using a 15G partition, but you can probably use 10G or less.

p.s. rick and adam- you've got a great show!

VISTA

Submitted by Smart Computer User on March 9, 2007 - 2:19pm.

If they were giving them away. That still would not entice me towards vista. MS has piled on the last straw, for me. I am through with a windows enviorment. The next machine I buy or build will not be a windows OS.
