Caller Barb/DSL Vs Cable Internet connections
Really enjoyed Barb's call and the following question is prompted by that call. As both you and Adam have used DSL
for a long time I feel you are well qualified to answer this
question:
1. Is the added speed of a cable internet connection
Vs DSL of any real consequence to the average computer user
that you and Rick encounter in your daily work?
2. What specific internet uses would benefit most from the faster cable connection?
I also appreciate the fact that your advice comes your collective "hands on" experience and is not influenced by payola.
DSL vs. Cable
DSL is perfect for what most people need. In fact, DSL can be superior in some situations.
Cable has a faster download speed (typically approaching 8mbps) while average DSL speed is approaching 1.5 mbps. Either is plenty fast for the average user.
Now, let's talk about upload speeds. While cable is very fast at downloading, you will truly only see those speeds if someone can upload content to you at that speed. Most downloads only move at about 256kbps-1.5mbps.
Upload is how fast you send information upstream such as emailing a photo or playing a video game online. DSL is typically much faster at uploading.
Many video gamers who play video games online prefer a fast DSL connection because they can see and shoot their cable Internet opponents slightly faster as their actions can be uploaded quicker.
DSL can also be more stable for uses such as video chat and Internet phone calls.
