Make sure you have the disks

I do my best to support small local businesses, because I own and operate a small, local business. However, when it comes to purchasing a computer, too many times I have seen the small computer shop put together a machine that is more expensive with less features than a name brand computer. And worse, the computer does NOT come with the original Windows CD and accompanying license.

If you aren't given and can't obtain the original Windows installation disk when you purchase a computer, then the copy of Windows on your computer (and probably other software as well...think Microsoft Office) is illegal. The software will work fine, but when it comes time to reinstall after a hard drive crash or if you want to upgrade, you are stuck with having to purchase full versions of these programs.

Be aware of small computer companies that don't provide you with these original disks. It may not seem like a big deal at the time of purchase, but it can be an extremely expensive mistake later.

If this helped, consider buying me a beer or an Americano!

Have disks !!

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 4, 2006 - 11:19am.

Good comments Rick ! BUT - - how many big companies ( Dell HP--eMachines - etc. provide an Operating System Disk ??? Non that I have been able to find !! They may offer a "restore diask " or have a copy on the hard drive --BUT they are not the same - in my opinion ! If the HD crashes what good is the " disk " if it is on the HD ???

Same comment for documentation !! Many times there is none or very little!!

Back in the mid 1990's I bought two Gateway Computers. They came with the OS Disks, many manuals for the motherboard, hard drives and etc. About a stack of goodies about six inches high !!

In 1999 I bought two computers and they came with Win 98 OEM diks -- but no KEY CODE nor any mention of one. The manual was very small and full of " geek " talk about setting BIOS and jumpers and such. Lots of fun !!

Your new web page is a great change. Keep it up and runnings.
