What is the point of TV weather?

What's the point of Television weather? I know that there are still a few people out there who don't have Internet, but it can't be enough to actually make a significant portion of the TV news audience.

I enjoy hearing the news because no matter where you get your news, you will likely hear something from each source that you won't hear, see or read on the other sources. The same goes with sports, you can read all about it, but to see clips and highlights you have to watch it on TV.

Weather on the other hand is scientific. The guys who read the weather on TV get their information from the same sources that great website like Accuweather and WeatherUnderground do.

Reviewing the weather on the Internet is also more complete. You can see a 15 day forecast, detailed images from space, current temperatures of anywhere in the country and announcements from the various weather services.

Local Weather

Submitted by Smart Computer User on September 28, 2006 - 12:40pm.

You're right - the weather on the evening news is useless. More than that, it's often irritating. The local TV weather guys always seem to feel like they have to exude some type of personality or quirkiness during their presentation and it usually flops in a big way (the worst happens when the weather guy makes a social or political comment). Also, they aren't really doing any analysis or thinking - just reading the same information we could get from the national weather service. It'll never go away on local TV, however, because the local news channels seem to be grasping for anything to fill up time.

TV Weather

When I'm on the road, The Weather Channel is the one thing that I will watch in a motel room first thing in the morning to figure out what might happen in the town I'm in during the day. Sure, I could use the wireless connection to get a forecast, but the TV will blurb out the same information without interaction or double-clicking while I'm getting dressed.

My point exactly

Submitted by Adam on September 26, 2006 - 4:39pm.

The TV weather I was talking about is the weather segment on the evening news. I think your comment proves my point. We have an entire cable channel dedicated to weather, why does it need to take up 15 minutes of news?

They could just run short series of charts that show the next day's forecast as they go into a commercial, similar to the way they show what's coming up after the news and community announcements.

It would make more time for news and other community features that you can't get anywhere else.
