Picasa vs. Elements - I challenge you to a duel!

Submitted by Adam on December 27, 2007 - 8:35pm.

Photoshop Elements is hands down the best consumer program for image editing. However, it is one of the worst for cataloging and sorting your photos. This is not an opinion. It is a fact.

To prove it I will challenge anyone who uses Photoshop Elements to sort and organize their photos to a duel of the image cataloging programs.

I encourage anyone who thinks that PSE is a better cataloging program to name one way that it is better, and I will reply with a way that same thing can be done in Picasa in fewer steps and/or faster. If I or Picasa falls short, I will provide two examples of things that can be done easier in Picasa than PSE.

Tagging in PSE

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 23, 2008 - 11:16am.

I don't mean this as an attack, because I haven't used Picasa, but how can tagging and sorting be any easier than it already is in Elements? To tag I just select the pictures I want to tag and then drag the tag onto one of the pictures. Unless it's reading my mind I can't imagine how it could get any easier. And to recall items from the catalogue you just click on the checkbox beside the tag.

The timeline, calendar view and musical slideshow are added bonuses that I now couldn't do without.

I'm currently holding about 11,000 pictures in my catalogue with well over 100 tags and I have never desired a BETTER product to organize my pictures. Every year I contemplate a CHEAPER product but the combination of editing and organizing is just really well done in PSE. Hopefully this year's version will include simple ways to post pictures to websites like Facebook, Flickr and blogs. They'd get my $100 again.

Don't replace PSE - just try Picasa

Submitted by Adam on April 24, 2008 - 8:31am.

In my original post I explained how people who pick on Picasa have usually never tried it or, as you put it, "...I haven't used Picasa..."

Just try Picasa, it will not replace PSE for some projects, but as a fast way to view all your photos and organize them, you will love Picasa.

Picasa won't interfere with PSE at all. I used Picasa as my first choice just to avoid the long load screens of PSE and for excellent backup. Everything else is just a big bonus.

Load Times - Wow Me

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 25, 2008 - 9:43am.

Fair enough. I'm open-minded but I normally need to be convinced by some feature deficiency or wowed by some incredible or beautiful GUI in order to commit the time to a test drive. Is there something that Picasa does that Elements doesn't, other than load faster? The load time's not much of an issue on my machine. I'm a long time Windows user so I'm used to waiting anyway.

picasa skeptic

Submitted by Smart Computer User on April 25, 2008 - 10:35pm.

I use both Picasa and PSE all the time. Picasa is just so user friendly starting with importing photos off my camera and organizing them into files using a filing system of my choosing. I can move, change, create new folders, make albums, web albums, gift CD's or email with a click right from Picasa. And I use PSE for lots of my editing. I do use Picasa for some simple editing and it does suffice for many of the day to day family photos. PSE is wonderful for more detailed editing. And of course it is so easy to open up in PSE from Picasa. For me it's not an either or. Picasa is hands above PSE for photo organization (and re-organization). PSE is great for editing that Picasa can't do. A great combo, but I would NEVER give up Picasa and I tell my friends and coworkers about it all the time. If someone is new to digital, I steer them to Picasa as a first stepping stone into organizing and simple editing and e-mailing and backup of digital photos.

Keywords

Submitted by Rick on March 30, 2008 - 7:41pm.

Picasa calls tags, keywords. You add tags to one or a group of pictures by first selecting the photo(s), then click View --> Keywords from the menus or use the keyboard shortcut; Ctrl + K
