In search of perfection

Submitted by Rick on September 23, 2007 - 10:47am.

As you have noticed, the site design has changed a little, yet again. Adam and I aren't graphic designers and don't have much of an eye for color (at least I don't). In lieu of those deficiencies, we rely on the professional designs of others for our site. I found this one yesterday and liked the clear distinct layout and fonts.

NONE of our content has changed and everything is in the same place it was before. Let us know what you think of this design...it may change again, but for the moment, I'm pretty happy with this one.

Keep 'em coming!

Submitted by Rick on September 25, 2007 - 10:33pm.

Thanks for the great feedback. I, too, liked the idea of putting our most important or popular tips front and center for quick access and will be looking for a way to best present that feature.

And I did try out the suggested colors for the left hand block titles, but they didn't seem to flow as well with this layout, but again keep the suggestions coming. We take everything into consideration!

Some good, one bad

Submitted by Smart Computer User on September 25, 2007 - 8:15am.

I'm liking the redesign -- especially the blue gradient header on the homepage and how it plays against the gray. The only criticism I have is the magenta color of your left sidebar headers. I'm all for making those different, but something like a 000066 or 000099 would be even better!

I love the suggestion about a quick way to get to the Help Me Rick fundamentals. I think people would refer to stuff like that over and over, and I know I would probably refer something like that to my friends.

ok a few things....

Submitted by Smart Computer User on September 24, 2007 - 12:01pm.

When we go to make a comment now the right column is over the comment page and we can't see what we are typing and when we browse from comment to column story the home button does not come up anymore, therefore everytime we want to return to the home page ( or first page) we have to either back all the way up or we have to click into helpmerick.com again. Kind of annoying.

Change your resolution

Submitted by Adam on September 24, 2007 - 5:51pm.

The days of 800x600 monitor resolution are over.

Right-click on your desktop and choose Properties

In the settings area slide the little bar at least to 1024x768

If things are too small after you do this, watch our video tip here on how to make stuff bigger even at higher resolutions.

Internet Explorer Problem

Submitted by Rick on September 28, 2007 - 12:07pm.

Sorry, we are working to resolve the issue with Internet Explorer/MSN/AOL users. Works fine in Firefox, but can't find out why the IE based browsers are having trouble. We hope to resolve it soon.

Thanks.

Suggestion

Submitted by Smart Computer User on September 23, 2007 - 9:33pm.

What are you guys famous for? The fundamentals. Whatever site design you decide on, you ought to have a box near the top with clickable topics such as:

- Setting Up a New Computer the HelpMeRick way
- Avoiding or deleting Norton
- Which operating system to order

Etc.

Otherwise we have to search for them, and these days, search for the search box.

Drupal

Submitted by Rick on September 23, 2007 - 7:44pm.

We use a CMS system called Drupal. They have a large, growing community of programmers and designers who share their knowledge with the rest of the Drupal community. I think this particular design comes out of Russia.

Where'd you find great site design?

Submitted by Smart Computer User on September 23, 2007 - 2:36pm.

The site design is very clear, readable, and attractive. You say you "found" it--do you mean it's a template? If so, it's one of the best I've seen. So many are too fussy and/or ugly. I'm on Macintosh--would I be able to use this template service (if that's what it is)? I desperately need a website for my own graphic design business, but I don't know html and I can't afford a web designer. Help!

Love the site!

I really like the colors and layout of your site. In my opinion, it is a keeper!
