Surf faster with Firefox Custom Keywords - Video Tip

Submitted by Rick on June 5, 2008 - 2:00pm.
  • Internet Tips

You already know that I highly recommend the Mozilla Firefox web browser for fast and safe Internet surfing. This week, I discovered a couple of new techniques to use with Firefox that allow you to visit your most used sites by typing just a letter or two. And if that isn't cool enough already, you can also use this technique to customize your searches and make them faster than ever as well.

Firefox call these features Custom Keywords. To use them, you first have to bookmark a web site, then modify the bookmark to create your Custom Keyword that can be any character on your keyboard (or combination of characters). Watch the video below to see this tip in action and how to create your own Custom Keywords!

If this helped, consider buying me a beer or an Americano!

firefox 3 does this automatically

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 11, 2008 - 4:27pm.

I have downloaded the beta of firefox three and it does all the steps you show in the video automatically for you. You don't have to do any of them. All you have to do is type the key word word in the box and it searches the bookmarks for you and brings it up.
I wanted to let you know this so that you can people can save a lot of time and rather than doing all the steps you mention, they can just download firefox three and get it done for them.

Go to the firefox download site and click on "get a peek at firefox three" An easy download if you are using firefox 2, and I suppose possible with explorer.
Check it out, it might be worth a video tip.
Regards, Jess

Bookmarks search box

Submitted by Smart Computer User on June 6, 2008 - 6:45pm.

Hi Rick,

Very useful tip!

In particular the search box in the Bookmarks Sidebar.
I didn't know it was there!

I have a huge number of Bookmarks, and they are well sorted into folders, and sub-folders. The ones I use everyday are easy to access, but I used to get really frustrated when I *knew* I had bookmarked something in the past, but couldn't recall what folder it was in.

Now, all I need to do is press Ctrl+B, and use the search box.

Many thanks,
Barry_83, from chat_room

And, remember to export (back-up) your bookmarks onto a Flash drive once in a while to make sure you don't loose too many of them if your computer has a problem.

Please read carefully

Submitted by Rick on June 7, 2008 - 9:57am.

If you read very carefully, and watch accompanying video, you will notice that nothing is mentioned about Internet Explorer. The reason? Because we are talking about features ONLY available in Mozilla Firefox...the web browser everyone should be using.
